The Whimsical Soul of September Wildflowers.

When I first noticed her, I wasn't quite sure if she was something in the present- rather, it seemed she was something out of a fairytale.

It began when I stumbled upon one of September Wildflowers' playlists on 8tracks. Every tune that fit into the playlist sent my heart soaring into musically induced fantasies and a sense of wonder. Not to mention, her profile picture is a silhouette of a girl with curling hair flowing in front of her face, drawing me into her mystery.

Once someone reached into me so deeply without ever actually speaking to me, obviously, I needed to know more. I looked through her playlists, and noticed the gentle sense of magic that flowed with each photo, each song. Soon after, I was scrolling through her Tumblr, finding images of mystical cottages and distant, dreamlike locations. I learned that her mystical vibes weren't just in the music she compiled or the reblogged pictures on her Tumblr, but also swirling through the art she created.  Each piece she creates curls with colors of whimsical mystery, pulling the viewer into her dream.

Indulge in her creative spirit. Feel the shift of your being into her magic, and see the stars through her gorgeous eyes. This, my friends, is Ruth Speer, the wonderful soul that is September Wildflowers.

When did you first begin creating your beautiful art pieces? Was there anything in particular that inspired you?

I don't really remember a time before I was drawing and making things! I remember being inspired by the picture books and fairy tales I read all the time when I was younger, with illustrations by people like Arthur Rackham and H J Ford.

You seem to have a very fairytale magic aura throughout your Tumblr and Instagram. What types of things interest you that create that dreamy feel?

I guess I do! I love fairytales. I remember having a postcard of "The Enchanted Flute" by Josephine Wall when I was little and just staring at it. I think I'm interested in imagination, and putting together things that don't make sense or may seem strange. I think that my Christian faith is kind of like magic. A lot of biblical stories read like fairytales - not in the sense that they aren't true, but the adventure and romance and hopefulness of God and in them. Also, I just like the ideas of glitter and mermaids and deep woods.

Are your portraits inspired by people around you?

Nearly always! When I started painting and drawing faces I would practice with pictures from Pinterest or something (as one does), but I realized pretty quickly that my art is much better and more meaningful, with more depth, when it involves my friendship with the person. Because it involves their story, and it's personal, and I think that comes through in the painting.

Do you happen to be a lover of literature? What’s your favorite book?

Oh my, yes, absolutely! My favorite book is called Laddie, by Gene Stratton Porter. It's a little obscure but the most refreshing and lovely story in the world. A very close second is Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. My favorite sections of a book store are usually the art books and children's lit.

Does the art you create reflect you? If so, how?

I don't think anyone can create art that doesn't reflect them in some way! Even if you set out to create art that was totally opposite from you, your personality would probably show through somehow. I like people and storytelling and colors, and putting unexpected things together, and making something as abstract as an emotion into something visual that people can recognize and understand.

What’s your favorite thing in the natural world (mountains, stars, etc.)?

I love so many things! Tall trees, fields of grass so long it's bent over, constellations and planets and moths. But my favorite things are probably flowers.

Do you have any advice for blooming artists?

What a nice word, blooming. I don't consider myself "arrived" to anything! But if I had any advice, it would be to find that art that makes you really excited and calm at the same time. The project that you can't wait to get back to, that you procrastinate on everything else just to sit and work on it. And try and find a way to do it your whole life.

If you could live in any time period, when would that be and where? Why?

I would live in the mid to late 1800s and be friends with the Rossetti family. My favorite poet, Christina Rossetti, and one of my favorite painters, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, were brother and sister, and their whole family was so artistic and interesting!

She is sunlight peeking through storm clouds like an angel, and her heart is one that is as deep as the sea. Her fantastic art and kind spirit have inspired me to keep creating and doing new and wonderful things. Most of all, Ruth reminded me of childhood and fantasy, of falling into a dream of wild gardens and enchanted pasts. I shall leave you with a lovely thought posted on her Tumblr:
